No more McSame

To the editor -- Wake up, America! We face a national election of tremendous importance. The obliteration of the middle class is close (something Thomas Wolfe warned of in his masterpiece "You Can't Go Home Again"), unless we, as voters, do the responsible thing. Don't vote for four more years of George Bush. This is what a vote for John McCain amounts to -- more of the "McSame." Another economic crisis in the making. Vote for real change and leadership in the Oval Office. Vote for Barack Obama.

Palin choice baffling

To the editor -- I voted for John McCain in the primaries, with the hope that he represented the best opportunity to unite the country's moderate majority. His selection of Sarah Palin as a running mate has destroyed that hope. Clearly he has chosen to embrace the political strategy developed by Karl Rove -- relying on the socially conservative base rather than appealing to the moderate mainstream.

I would like to know what specific qualifications John McCain thinks Sarah Palin possesses. If he were to die in office, could she effectively recover the economy, conduct foreign affairs or maintain and enhance homeland security? She has already publicly discussed the possibility of going to war with Russia -- the world's second largest nuclear power -- over Georgia, a tiny country on Russia's border. This shows a shocking lack of understanding of geopolitics and military force.

Is she truly the most qualified individual they were able to find? This selection raises huge questions about John McCain's judgment, and his willingness to subordinate the nation's interest for political expediency.

John McCain has lost my vote. Sarah Palin may be charming and spunky, but she is not qualified to be one 72-year-old heartbeat away from becoming commander in chief.

A modern woman

To the editor -- Re: Wendy Warren's Sept. 16 letter, "Palin's a Poser."

Warren contends that "thinking" women will invariably reject Palin as a representative for modern womanhood. This premise in her argument is critically flawed.

Modern womanhood should clearly be defined by intrinsic and extrinsic success. Warren is egregious in her statement that Palin is a facade. Palin is absolutely a woman who embodies success in this world. Palin is married, a mother, a public servant, has defeated political corruption, has led Alaska to prosperity and continues to rule as governor. By definition, Palin is a modern woman.

Palin has accomplished inexhaustibly more than most politicians. She epitomizes that which Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton worked so hard to achieve over 150 years ago. These women would weep for joy if they could see the fruit of their labor: A confident woman running for vice president.

Lambasted for her conservative viewpoints, Palin is deemed lesser than other politicians. This, too, is absurdity in Warren's argument. Economically, politically and socially, her record attests she is second to no one. Palin has unequivocally established herself to be unyielding and continuous in representing the people she serves.

Fatuous at best, Ms. Warren's letter is completely devoid of logic.
