The 2008-09 Town Hall Lecture Series opens Wednesday with Frank McCourt, the Irish-American Pulitzer Prize-winning author of "Angela's Ashes." In his 1996 memoir, told from the point of view of McCourt as a boy, he details his childhood as a poor Irish Catholic in Limerick, Ireland.
The topic of McCourt's Town Hall talk is "Was I Teaching or Was I Learning? I'd Say Both."
The remaining lectures in the series are:
* Nov. 5 -- "Is the World Really Flat?" Canadian diplomat Peter Sutherland will discuss the intricacies of globalization and its consequences on trade, international finance and business development
* March 18 -- "China Road: A Journey Into the Future of a Rising Power." Rob Gifford, chief Beijing correspondent for National Public Radio, will share the rich mosaic of modern Chinese life and pose the question, "Could China possibly become the next global superpower?"
* April 22 -- "National Geographic Reports: A Global Perspective." Lisa Ling was the first female host of National Geographic Channel's "Explorer." Her stories, posted from more than 24 countries around the world, provide an unforgettable human narrative.
All Town Hall lectures start at 11 a.m. at the Capitol Theatre and tickets are sold only as a package deal. Tickets for next season cost $70 through the Allied ArtsCenter. Call 966-0930.
