Help scan away hunger

The "Scan-Away Hunger Coupon Campaign" is running now through the end of the year.

The program helps provide meals at the Union Gospel Mission, which serves 300 to 500 meals to people in need every day.

Until Dec. 31, shoppers can help by picking up a "Scan-Away Hunger" coupon at local grocery stores and giving them to a cashier. The coupon adds $1.92 to the total purchase price and provides one meal at the mission.

Participating stores are Wray's Food and Drug stores, Rosauer's, Grocery Outlet, Selah Red Apple Market, Wapato Market Place, Toppenish Market Place and Grandview Market Place.

 

WV church sets guest preacher

H.B. London Jr. is the guest preacher at West Valley Church of the Nazarene on Sunday morning.London is the vice president of Church and Clergy Outreach at Focus on the Family, a Christian ministry whose aim -- according to its Web site at www.focusonthefamily.com -- is "to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ through a practical outreach to homes ... "

A fourth-generation minister, London been a pastor for more than 30 years. He's also a personal friend of West Valley Church of the Nazarene's senior pastor, the Rev. Holland Lewis.

Everyone's invited to hear London preach at the 10 a.m. worship service at the church, 7109 W. Nob Hill Blvd.

'Journey to Wholeness' nears

The "Journey to Wholeness 2008" expo takes place in Yakima next Saturday. The event features presentations and information on a variety of alternative healing and wellness services and products, including acupuncture, herbs, aura imaging and massage.

The fair runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Howard Johnson Plaza, 9 N. Ninth St. Admission is $3.

Missions Conference next week

Wiley Union Church invites everyone to its second annual Missions Conference.

This year's theme is "Till the Whole World Knows."

The event features an open-house format with information from groups such as Life Choices of Yakima, Jonah Ministries of Trout Lake, Africa Medical Missions, Teen Missions International, Union Gospel Mission and Wiley Union Church Ministries. Breakout sessions will also be available.

The conference runs from 1:45 to 5 p.m. next Saturday at the church, 2711 S. Wiley Road, at the corner of South Wiley and Ahtanum roads in West Valley. A potluck will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. Everyone's asked to bring a dish to share.

Actor due in Grandview

Actor Frank Runyeon is the guest star at Blessed Sacrament Parish's sixth annual auction and dinner.

He'll give two presentations -- "Sermon on the Mount" and "Hollywood vs. Faith" -- next Saturday night in Grandview.

Runyeon starred for seven years as Steve Andropoulos on "As the World Turns" opposite Meg Ryan, according to the biography on his Web site at www.frankrunyeon.com.

A graduate of Princeton University, he continued his studies at Fuller Seminary, Yale Divinity School and General Theological Seminary. He's currently writing his autobiography, "Escape from Hollywood: An Actor's Journey."

The event begins at 5 p.m. with a social hour and silent auction. Appetizers will be served at 5:30 p.m. A live auction starts at 6:45 p.m. Runyeon takes the stage at 8 p.m.

Tickets cost $25 per person or $180 per table for a table of eight. Attendees must be 21 or older.

Space is limited. Tickets are on sale now at the church office or by calling 882-1657. The church is at 1201 Missouri St. in Grandview.

 

Toppenish Lutheran eyes German Picnic

Toppenish Faith Lutheran Church is hosting its third annual German Picnic next Sunday. Three homemade quilts will be raffled at the event, which takes place from noon to 3 p.m. at the church, 61801 U.S. Highway 97 in Toppenish.

Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children. Proceeds will go to local food banks.

'The Shack' open for discussion

Two local churches are hosting discussion groups to review the Christian novel "The Shack."

Set in Oregon, the 200-plus page paperback focuses on Mack, who's overtaken by "The Great Sadness" after the abduction of his youngest daughter, Missy. He receives a letter inviting him back to the scene of the crime, a shack in the wilderness of Eastern Oregon. The letter is signed, "Papa," Mack's wife's name for God.

At the shack, Mack's greeted by The Father, who appears as a gregarious black woman; The Son, a Jewish, Middle-Eastern-looking workman; and The Holy Spirit, a luminous woman with Asian features. And he gets to truly know God.

'Laughter and Latté' at Nazarene church

Women are invited to a "Laughter and Latté" event at West Valley Church of the Nazarene.

The event features pastries, lattés and a short concert featuring Carrie Kay. It takes place from 9 to 11 a.m. Oct. 25 at the church, 7109 W. Nob Hill Blvd.

Yard sale set at Selah Covenant

The booster club at Selah Covenant Christian School is holding a yard sale next Saturday. The event takes place from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 560 McGonagle Road. Proceeds will benefit the preschool through fourth-grade school.

Sale items include Ellensburg Blue agates, livestock supplies, vintage jewelry, antique furniture, Christmas decorations and clothing, among other items. Coffee and baked goods will also be available.

Spiritual Life studies 'The Soul of Money'

Unity Spiritual Life Center is beginning a new seven-week study of the book "The Soul of Money" by Lynne Twist.

Twist was a global fundraiser for The Hunger Project for more than 20 years. In her book, she discusses toxic myths surrounding money and the attitudes of yours or mine vs. yours and mine.

The book study begins on Sunday. There will be four groups hosted by people in their homes on different nights of the week. Everyone is welcome to join in for the book study. Call Unity for more information at 575-5551.

Labyrinth dedication Sunday in Sunnyside

The congregation of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Sunnyside will be dedicating a labyrinth Sunday morning. The dedication takes place immediately following the 11 a.m. worship service.

The labyrinth was planned and created by church member Andrew Myers for his Eagle Scout project. It's located in the side yard of the church and is open to the public.

After the dedication, participants will be given instruction on different ways to pray and meditate while walking the labyrinth.
