Payback time for Obama
To the editor -- Wow, it looks like the whole country voted for Barack Obama, I mean, Americans from all backgrounds. I prayed to God for him to win and he did. My biggest prayer is that he can stop the war. I'm a middle-class white female who has been through it all. Since I voted for Obama, I hope he can do a few things for me.
He said something about taxes. Could we tax those people who are filthy rich, make them give up some of their blood money and somehow give it to the children and those who have at least $1 million in medical bills?
Could we make it an above the law act that anyone who abuses, molests, kidnaps, kills and steals gets straight death? God doesn't want these kind of people.
I'm a veteran. You know how many vets are on this Earth. Could we always be honored, no matter if we didn't fight in a war?
I thank the president-elect. I'm proud of him for not folding after all the bashing from the opposing campaign.

Take care of our own
To the editor -- Our national economy is a disaster. We have allowed large corporations to outsource production to foreign countries to look for cheaper labor. U.S. plants have been closed, people laid off and now we wonder why our unemployment has become a deterrent for growth of our country. We need to bring our production back home and give our own citizens jobs.
The banking and investment systems have been given too much power and have no regulations for accountability. CEOs of failed corporations should not receive bonuses or payouts for doing a bad job.
I am a senior citizen depending on Social Security as my only income. I do not recall any authorization being given to tap the program for any other purpose than the original plan of payroll deductions to ensure the future. We are now told it will run out of money and offer private investments for the younger employees.
We need to get real and take care of our own before we help everyone else.

Hands off the clock
To the editor -- I am writing to support Mary Stensrud's idea in her Nov. 9 letter, "Time's come to end DST." Leave the clock alone!
I suggest we move the clock a half hour ahead since we are now in Standard Time and be done with it. It's all arbitrary anyhow. The sun will shine, the Earth will turn. The moon will come and go. I'll be much happier and my digestion and internal clock can get used to it once and for all.
After all, as President Lyndon Johnson said, politics is the art of compromise, so let's give or take half an hour and call it good -- and final!

Auto industry must change
To the editor -- I'm against a straight bailout for the auto industry. It makes no sense to give them money to make the same old vehicles that there's no market for.
I'm for providing funds to retool the production lines to make super miles per gallon, compressed air, compressed natural gas or electric vehicles. Face it, they are making last century's technology with this century's prices. The executives in charge of these companies best idea during a gas crisis was to make hybrid versions of their giant SUVs. When gas was $4-plus a gallon, Ford's best idea was to come out with a new F150. Maybe it's time for them to fail and let someone pick them up, like what happened with Washington Mutual.
Someone who actually has some foresight to not do the same old thing year after year.

Contain the damage
To the editor -- This is an open letter to our elected representatives.
Now with the election over and the American people having voted for reason and excellence in government, I am asking you to do all you can to keep the Bush administration from enacting its proposed rule changes affecting a wide range of national priorities.
Mountain top mining, drilling in scenic areas and undermining health care must not be allowed to go through. The last throes of the Bush administration remind me of vandals who would rather destroy than see anyone else enjoy that which is prized.
Please do whatever it takes to keep the man currently inhabiting the White House from creating more messes the people and their elected representatives will have to waste time and money to fix.
