YAKIMA -- More than 20 Yakima Valley organizations will receive bequests totaling almost $14 million from the estate of Yakima philanthropist Helen Jewett.

According to her will admitted to probate in Yakima County Superior Court, Jewett left money to the interests she pursued during her lifetime — the arts, education, children, recreation and improving the community’s quality of life.

Steve Caffery, chief executive officer for The Capitol Theatre, which received $1 million in the will, said the gifts will change the community.

“Helen was a person who, in simplest terms, loved beauty and loved to have fun and loved the theater,” Caffery said. “We intend to use the bequest in that spirit and in her honor.”

He said the theater plans to spend interest from the gift to enhance theater programming and keep ticket prices low.

The total will, including bequests to nieces and nephews, is $15.5 million.

The Yakima Valley Community Foundation received the largest sum, $1.25 million.

Other major recipients that received $1 million each are the Yakima Valley Community Foundation, Memorial Foundation, Yakima Area Arboretum, Heritage University, Yakima Valley Museum, Yakima Family YMCA  and the Yakima Symphony.
