Here are this week's volunteer needs in the Yakima Valley:

* RIDING CENTER: Pegasus Project is a North American Riding for the Handicapped Association member center providing therapeutic riding and equine-assisted activities for people with special needs and disabilities of all ages. Sessions are eight weeks long with a break in between. Volunteers typically work two hours a week -- same time, same day each week.

Next training is Oct. 6 at 6:30 p.m.

For more information, contact Michelle Chalfant at 969-3310 or gchalfant2002@charter.net.

* HOMETOWN MENTORS: Davis High School is looking for Hometown Mentors. Mentors work throughout remainder of a student's junior and senior year to provide guidance to high potential, low-income students applying for college.

Mentors need to be at least 21, value higher education, appreciate cultural diversity and have the ability to work with students from diverse backgrounds. All potential mentors must fill out an application and have a criminal background check.

For more information, call Sirena Phillips at 574-1933.

* CONCERT HELPERS: The Seasons Performance Hall needs volunteers, from teens to seniors, to help at concerts. Volunteers will help sell tickets or refreshments, assist the artists, welcome concertgoers -- then enjoy the music. Help is also needed with occasional mailings and placing posters around town.

The Seasons is in downtown Yakima at 101 S. Naches Ave. Visit its Web site at www.seasonsmusicfestival.com.

Contact Judy at judy@theseasonsyakima.com or call 453-1888 for more information.

* CHILD ADVOCATES: Volunteers are needed to be advocates for abused and neglected children in our community. If you are willing to commit time to make a difference in the life of a child, we will train you to act as an independent advocate.

CASA volunteers have a variety of professional, educational and ethnic backgrounds. No special experience is required. Volunteers are selected on the basis of their objectivity, competence and commitment.

Call Anna Martinez at Yakima County Juvenile Court CASA at 574-2068.

* ANIMAL RESCUE: A newly established animal rescue group, Wags to Riches Animal Rescue and Sanctuary, has many volunteer opportunities available. The most pressing areas are:

* Foster homes -- provide love, attention, time for the rescue group to find a home for a pet. Wags to Riches provides food, support and vet care.

* Volunteer coordinator -- Someone is needed to help coordinate the volunteers by keeping in contact with them and telling them about upcoming events or meetings.

* Answering phone calls --
This can be done in the comfort of your own home.

If interested, contact Kim at www.wagstorichesanimalrescue.org or 453-4155.

* Volunteer Opportunities is prepared by Sirena Phillips, volunteer coordinator of Yakima's Retired Senior Volunteer Program. Contact her at 574-1933, 120 S. Third St. Suite 200B, Yakima, WA 98901, or sirena.phillips@co.yakima.wa.us.
